Province seeks input on legalization of marijuana

June 7, 2017

Please take time to respond to AUMA’s survey on issues relating to the 2018 legalization of cannabis so we can represent your views in our response to the Province later this summer.  Members can also provide feedback through discussions at our June Mayors' Caucuses in Okotoks.

In addition to responding to AUMA’s survey, municipalities can respond to the Province’s questionnaire, which was recently released. The Province’s questionnaire is similar to AUMA’s survey as it relates to the following topics:

  • Legal age of consumption – should it be older than the federal minimum legal age of 18?
  • Purchasing cannabis – how it will distributed and where will it be sold?
  • Using cannabis in public – where can it be consumed and under what circumstances?
  • Safe roads and workplaces – should Alberta create new impaired driving laws and how should it be treated in the workplace?

Municipalities may also provide a written submission to the Alberta Cannabis Secretariat at acs@gov.ab.ca.  Please copy Kelly Santarossa on your response. Responses to the questionnaire and/or Secretariat are due by July 31. Additional information about cannabis and legalization, as well as a Community Toolkit that can help guide a community conversation, is available at www.alberta.ca/cannabis.

The province will use the input gathered to develop a Cannabis Framework that outlines proposed next steps for Alberta.  When the draft Framework is released later this fall, AUMA will provide further input.
