At the Mayors’ Caucus in March 2017, the City of St. Albert brought forward a motion highlighting water management issues that hamper municipal efforts to protect water bodies. The motion, adopted by Caucus attendees, complements AUMA’s existing municipal water policies.
In response to the motion, AUMA developed a document outlining the status of the recommendations and recently sent a letter to the Minister of Environment and Parks calling on the Province to expand water monitoring, and align policies and plans to improve water quality and quantity management in the province.
The Province has taken some steps towards fulfilling the recommendations outlined in the motion. For example, as part of the roll-out of its 2017 budget, the Province announced that it is providing Alberta’s Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils with $3.2 million per year for the next three years to assess watershed health and plan for water management.
