Job Description : 

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is seeking a detailed oriented, positive and customer service focused professional to join our People Services Team.  Reporting to the Director of People Services, the Payroll & Benefits Coordinator is responsible for the daily operations, bi-weekly processing, and annual responsibilities of the City’s payroll and benefits area.  This position also provides the same service for the Fort Saskatchewan Public Library.   

Responsibilities in the area of Payroll include full cycle responsibility consisting of tasks such as bi-weekly processing of payroll for up to 450 employees; set-up of all personal employee information in payroll cards; track employee time bank progression; employment verifications requested by employees and outside organizations; work in conjunction with Finance to ensure all payroll general ledger reconciliations are completed as directed by the City’s financial procedures; reporting and processing of all tax remittances, T4 and T4A’s, and R.O.E’s. 

This position is responsible for review, maintenance, and suggestions for change to all employee benefits such as Alberta Blue Cross, Local Authorities Pension Plan, Employee EAP and the City’s Lifestyles program.  Responsibilities in the area of benefits include processing of new employee benefit applications with external providers; maintain regular contact with outside benefit service providers and negotiate changes or renewals; monitor trends for “total rewards” and ensure all benefits provided are still relevant; while ensuring all City policies and procedures are reviewed and updated.    

The successful candidate will have completed a diploma in a related field, as well as, obtained certification through the Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certification (PCP) or the Certified Payroll Manager Certification (CPM) program.  Any formalized training in benefits administration would be considered an asset.  A minimum of three years of experience working in Payroll and Benefits is required.  Experience in a Municipal and/or Human Resources environment would be an asset.  The Payroll and Benefits Coordinator provides advice or support as required to all City staff in a friendly and professional manner. The ability to communicate in a positive, confident and respectful manner (written and oral) to internal and external stakeholders is essential.
